Etymology
Ultimately a compound of かいだ kaida and でぃー【字】 dii "character, word, writing".
The word Kaida is believed by Sudō Toshiichi (須藤利) to be a borrowing from the Japanese term かりや【仮屋】 kariya (假屋 in traditional writing), meaning "place of loaning and borrowing" as well as "temporary place". Compare also かる【借る】 karu and かりる【借りる】 kariru "to borrow". During the time of the Satsuma Domain, these places functioned as government offices and were used mainly for tax-collection purposes. Cognates include かいや kaiya in both modern Kagoshima and Okinawa as well as かりゃ karya in Ishigaki Yaeyama.

Kaida glyphs are form of pictographic writing or mnemonic device that was used in Yonaguni and most parts of the Yaeyama Islands prior to the introduction of the standard Japanese writing system. Along with Suzhou numerals and Barazan ropes, it was primarily used for identification, record-keeping and tax purposes.
