どぅじん

dujin

Pronunciation: [dud͡ʑiŋ̍]

Definition

Noun

  1. Traditional Okinawan cross-collar garment resembling a short kimono

Etymology

Cognate with Kikai どぅぎん dugin; and Okinawan どぅじん dujin "cross-collar garment". Possibly from どぅー【体】 duu "body" and the rendaku form of ちん chin "clothes". Possibly also influenced by the Chinese term 【對襟・对襟】 "parallel-collar garment" (cf. Mandarin duìjīn; Cantonese deoi3 kam1; Hokkien tùi-khim).

Notes

For women, a dujin is normally worn overtop a white pleated long skirt called a かかん kakan.

Originally, the dujin was considered outerwear, but it later became an undergarment worn typically beneath a っわーぼーいー qwaabooii "winter wear (worn by women)" or わたんす watansu "winter robe (worn by women)".

This term is sometimes given the Kanji 【胴衣】.

Also called どぅんす dunsu.
